Spring has finally arrived, the flowers are starting to come alive,
With the end of the school semester drawing near, that could only mean one thing…Busker Fest is almost here!
One of my favorite events of the year in Lawrence is the annual Busker Festival. In less than two months, the ninth annual fest will have devoured Mass St. with street performers, musicians and all sorts of weird and wild things.
I plan to do more features about the festival in anticipation of the 2016 fest, but the photos featured in this story are all about one performer: Bandalonie. And they are all basically the same shot but use varying processing techniques and show different expressions in his face. This guy was a great act, he played entertaining music, he made faces and you could tell he was into it. I started out photographing him from a distance, but later moved in closer for some head shots. The contraption he had strapped to his back and heels was a site to see!
What really drew me into this character was his face. The lines and deep groves showed years of wear and his tanned, leathery skin showed that he’s spent some time in the sun. He had a thick Cajun accent, which totally matched his character.
If you’re in the Kansas City area on the weekend of May 27-29, wrangle your family together and make the short drive to Lawrence. The weather is usually great and the performers will impress you! And make sure to stop by a local restaurant to recharge and fuel up for a fun-filled day; you just might see Bandalonie!
